OPEN DAY BIONIC University: why Ukraine needs Entrepreneurship course

On June 14, BIONIC University held the first of the two planned OPEN DAYS, dedicated to the Entrepreneurship course. The course purposes and contents were discussed at the meeting; and CISCO company represented its program “Starting a business”.

Today technologies develop at inconceivable speed, and the rate of their development will continue to increase. IT sector appeared to be the only branch which did not suffer during the crisis. This makes IT sphere particularly attractive for doing business. Besides, Ukraine is rich in talented people with great ideas, which is proven by successful projects of Ukrainian origin such as Viewdle, PayPal, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Valeriya Zabolotna, curator of BIONIC University, cited the following statistics: “More than five thousand graduates of our high schools receive job offers from abroad immediately. This shows that we have many bright minds. We believe that their ideas can be and must be put into business. By means of the Entrepreneurship course we would like to create the atmosphere of mutual intellectual enrichment, activity and enthusiasm, to develop business culture in Ukraine.”

We will invite as coaches only practicing entrepreneurs from IT sphere, who have successfully started their own business in Ukraine. This will allow involving experience most relevant to the Ukrainian market.

Roman Romanyuk, supervisor of business programs, noted, “We invite people who are businessmen. They can tell how to register a company, what documents it is necessary to prepare, and how to keep books, as well as how to employ and dismiss personnel. Usually nobody thinks of these issues in advance but when you face them, they may scare. Ukrainian legislation has many nuances but it is quite possible to get things straight.”

Having received necessary skills of doing business, students can proceed with their undertakings and file an application to GTF grant fund to win funding for their startup.

The Entrepreneurship course is held jointly with partner companies. During the OPEN DAY on June 14, one of partners of BIONIC University – CISCO company – presented the program “Starting a business”.

“Starting a business” program is intended for those who already have an interest in creation of own business but who does not know where to begin. CISCO and My Own Business Inc. developed contents of the program, and Stanford University provided the library of videos with entrepreneurs speaking on different topics, access to which will be given to all the students of the program. Duration of the study may vary from one to three months, the schedule is formed depending on the group preferences. The program is based on practice whereas the theory is given to the extent necessary for budget calculation, marketing campaign elaboration, etc. Upon the program completion, students defend their business plans. “Starting a business” will provide insight into business and will help to develop a business model accordingly.

Anna Petrova, regional manager of CISCO Entrepreneur Institute, shared her experience, “Business is not a native ability, it can be learned; it is rather a certain philosophy. Having completed the studies, you can understand that it’s not yours. And this is normal; this means we helped you to realize your goals. It happens that students come to us with one idea and leave with completely different one. Dialogue with people who have already built something helps to understand entrepreneurship and find an approach to it.”

Launch of Entrepreneurship courses is scheduled for autumn 2013, you may already submit your application. Key selection criteria will be motivation and ideas for own business. Experience in information and communication technologies would be an asset.

The next OPEN DAY meeting and presentation of another program of the course, HР Life, will be held on Friday, June 21. Registration is compulsory!
